Syosset teen grows woodworking business one handcrafted piece at a time
For the last two years, the 17-year-old has been operating Schustercraft out of his parent's basement. He creates everything from custom furniture and office pieces to gifts.

While most teens spend their free time on sports or video games, Oliver Schuster is building a business - one piece of wood at a time.
"I do custom woodworking," says Schuster. "I started it and my friend helps me out."
For the last two years, the 17-year-old has been operating Schustercraft out of his parent's basement, creating everything from custom furniture and office pieces to gifts.
"I was very crafty as a kid and I just picked it up. My dad started a little bit, he had a few tools here and there. I always came down, made stuff with him," says Schuster.
Schuster says he's built over 100 pieces so far and that every project comes down to the details.
"We start with raw lumber, just unfinished stuff. We cut it, sand it, finish it. We don't outsource anything and we do everything in-house," he says.
One of his biggest and most recent projects was a big conference table for the Wyandanch Fire Department.
"That was a big project that I took on. We did it came out amazing," says Schuster. "That table took about five months."
Schuster says despite some projects taking months to complete, the hours and hours of hard work is worth it.
"It's amazing. We love showing our work," he says.
