A Deer Park woman will spend the next 18 years behind bars in prison after a dynamite explosion left her boyfriend disfigured, costing him his hand and part of his arm.
Prosecutors say the attack unfolded on March 22, 2024, following an argument inside the victim's apartment between him and Keyonna Waddell. After the dispute, the man asked her to leave. Believing she had gone, he returned home later that night and went to bed.
Sometime after falling asleep, he awoke to the sound of hissing and saw what looked to be the stick of dynamite.
Prosecutors say in an attempt to stop it from detonating, the victim attempted to extinguish the explosive device but it didn't work, so he grabbed it and tried to throw it out the window.
It instead detonated in his hand.
While injured, he ran toward the end of his driveway. There he saw Waddell leaving the scene.
Emergency responders took him to Nassau University Medical Center, where doctors were ultimately forced to amputate what remained of his hand, along with part of his arm.
Waddell was arrested and later convicted by a jury trial in April on charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
She was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison with five years of post-release supervision.
