Princeton University to ban electric scooters and skateboards across much of campus
Any prohibited personal electric vehicles found on campus may be impounded for 14 days by campus authorities.

Citing safety and fire concerns, Princeton University has announced a sweeping new "Personal Electric Vehicle" policy banning e-scooters, hoverboards, and electric skateboards across much of campus.
The policy, effective June 1, 2026, applies to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Most motorized devices are prohibited within a central restricted zone, and no PEVs can be brought inside any University-owned building—even outside the zone.
While on-campus residents face a near-total ban, commuters have a narrow exception: registered electric bicycles may be used to travel to and from campus, provided they have a permit, are parked in designated areas, meet safety standards, and charge only removable batteries.
Enforcement will be immediate—prohibited PEVs found on campus may be impounded for up to two weeks, with the University not liable for any damage. Electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and other disability-related devices are exempt. Manual bicycles, scooters, and skateboards remain allowed.
