Bronx leaders are urging social media platforms to stop the spread of ‘teen takeover’ posts as spring break starts today.

Bronx elected officials and the Bronx district attorney’s office are working to prevent another “teen takeover” at local shopping centers like the one that caused chaos at Bay Plaza earlier this year.

Officials are calling on social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat to help stop the spread of posts that promote large, unsafe gatherings and riots.

The move comes after a frightening scene unfolded at Bay Plaza during winter recess in February, when hundreds of teens swarmed the mall and surrounding outdoor stores. The takeover forcing several businesses yo close early, and the safety of the teens and shoppers was heightened.

Police took 18 teens and one 19-year-old into custody in connection with the incident. Those arrested were charged with riot and unlawful assembly.
