It's becoming an all-too-common and dangerous scene on Long Island. Video shows what looks like a young kid riding an e-dirt bike on Indian Head Road in Kings Park and getting into a confrontation with a driver.

"Kid could have gotten killed, and then it would have been the driver's fault," said Pat Cyran, of Kings Park.

As News 12 has reported, there has been an increase in young adults, and even kids, riding these bikes in traffic and getting into accidents.

Rosemary Nuccio from Commack says she once had kids on e-bikes in front of her car.

"There were three of them driving and I'm trying to stay behind them so that I'm not in their way, you know? And they just keep coming out," she said.

The Smithtown Supervisor's Office says it recognizes the dangers and is updating its codes to include e-bike regulations and tougher penalties.

The Suffolk police commissioner previously told News 12 that e-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks. Riders can only go on some streets with a speed limit of over 30 mph.

The Bike Cave in Commack sells mostly traditional bicycles, BMX bikes and beach cruisers. But they do sell some e-bikes and e-dirt bikes. Managers say they always warn parents about the risks involved in getting those for their kids.

"The main difference is one has pedals and has a chain and everything just like a normal bicycle, whereas an electric dirt bike, there are no pedals. It's for off-road use only," said Jared Cooper, with the Bike Cave.

As News 12 reported, last fall a North Bellmore teenager died riding an e-bike to school and an East Islip teenager also hit a deer on his e-bike.
