Rail repairs completed, service restored after train strikes car east of Farmingdale

Crews finished making repairs to badly damaged rails around 8:30 this morning, a little more than 12 hours after a train struck a car east of Farmingdale, the MTA said.
"There was over one thousand feet of damage to our track, mainly to our third rail infrastructure, but again, a Herculean effort by our incredible staff getting one track back so we can provide rush hour service," Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free said.
Full service resumed shortly before 9 a.m. in both directions after the crash shuttered the line last night and caused delays during this morning's rush hour commute.
"It all kind of was a mess," Ronkonkoma commuter Deanna Reith said.
According to the MTA police, a train headed eastbound hit a car at the Little Neck East Road crossing around 7 p.m. last night. The circumstances surrounding how the car got onto the tracks are still unclear.
Three adult passengers were injured, but none of the crew or anyone in the car was hurt. According to the MTA, 40 people were on the train.
