Multiple Massapequa Park roadways saw flooding and icy conditions after a water main break on Lakeshore Drive Sunday evening.

Officials say it happened around 4 p.m. Officials believe cold temperatures contributed to the main break.

“There was a lot of dirt that was coming up out of the water,” said resident Ron Mener. “It was very brown and coming out very forcefully.”

It took hours to turn off the valves. Officials say that’s because some of them were frozen with ice. They explained that the pipes themselves don’t freeze, but as the ground around them shifts in the cold, the pipes can crack.

The freezing temperatures cause the water that flooded the streets to freeze over, creating icy and dangerous conditions for cars and pedestrians.

“I love my community. I love everything about it,” said Mener. “But I felt that this was not handled the way that it should be. And it should be addressed, and it should be handled as if it is an emergency.”

After hours of flooding, town officials did finally go door to door to inform neighbors of the situation and that the water would be off for a few hours.

A time of when water service would return to customers was not immediately known as of Sunday night.
