Police say a man has been arrested in connection with a Shirley hit-and-run that left one person dead and another injured on Thursday night.
According to police, two men from Mastic Beach parked their car on the side of the busy William Floyd Parkway in a narrow shoulder to change a flat tire just before 7 p.m.
Investigators say 51-year-old Jonathan Shaver, of Rocky Point, crashed his black Honda into their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The incident happened during one of the busiest times of the day for this road as Long Islanders drove home from work.
Police say Edgar Mejia, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, Omar, was rushed to Stony Brook University hospital in critical condition.
According to court records, Shaver pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip. His bail was set at $50,000 cash, $100,000 insured bond or $250,000 partially secured surety bond.
