Snow from the recent storm is causing parking problems throughout the Hudson Valley as large piles continue to block spaces and make it difficult for plows to get through.

DPW crews in many communities have started snow removal operations but say double‑parking is slowing their work.

Drivers said they have few options because mounds of snow are taking up open spaces, creating a chain reaction on many streets.

Tuesday coverage

In Yonkers, alternate‑side parking is suspended today and tomorrow, and officials said enforcement will resume Friday so snow removal operations can continue. Drivers not parked properly will be ticketed.

"I've seen a lot of people double parking, a lot of people cursing at each other because they're blocking the traffic," said Yonkers resident Anthony Anderson.

New Rochelle resident Patricia Gilhooley said parking remains difficult. "It's horrendous. Anyone that doesn't have a parking spot or their own driveway, you're screwed," she said.

Some municipalities are offering free garage parking while snow removal continues, and residents are being urged to check with their local town or city hall.

Officials across the region said double‑parking is never allowed and becomes even more dangerous after a major storm.

"With the snowstorm, it makes it 10,000 times worse to park out here. Looking up and down this street, you're going to see a car double parked every 50 feet," said Westchester County resident Adam Jones.

DPW crews said double‑parked cars make it difficult for plows to do their job.

"Biggest problem has been the parking number one. Please do not double park because if you double park, our plows cannot get through," said Commissioner Damani Bush with the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works.

Crews said they are still out in force and that there is a significant amount of snow left to clear.
