A Riverhead man is accused of following a 13-year-old girl after school and exposing himself to her.

Police say 50-year-old Martin Cruz Vazquez followed the teen in an SUV Friday on Osborn Avenue near Pulaski Street.

He allegedly got out of the car and approached her.

The girl then told a police officer who was nearby.

Police say further investigation revealed Cruz Vazquez approached the teen earlier this month and exposed himself.

The Riverhead School District sent an email to parents praising the student's responsible actions and promising that safety is their top priority.

Residents say it usually feels like a safe area, but anything can happen.

“I just think certain areas over here by the school should have police patrolling," said one resident who wished to remain anonymous. “Parents got to be aware of this too with their kids walking home from school. You have to be very cautious about what’s going on around here.”

Riverhead police urge anyone who may had a similar experience to give them a call.
