Shop till you drop with the New York State Police - that’s what 35 lucky kids got to do Wednesday night.

Troopers took kids and their families around Walmart in Farmingdale to help with Christmas shopping and add a few more gifts under the tree.

The New York State Police say this is the first time it has done an event like this, drawing inspiration from other local police departments that host “Shop-With-a-Cop” programs.

Not only did troopers want to make sure these families have a merry Christmas, but they also hoped to build relationships with the kids and the community.

“A lot of the time they look at us just in our uniform and don’t know we are people like them," said Trooper Michelle Brutus. "We want to build that relationship, build that rapport with them, give back, and help them out.”

Some of the most popular items kids picked out included Pet Scruffs, Bumper Cars from Bumper Rivals, Spider-Man action figures and various clothing items.

Brutus says state police will be taking more kids and their families shopping Thursday night at Walmart in Westbury.
