Hockey players with disabilities from across the country are hitting the ice on Long Island this weekend for the 15th annual USA Sled Hockey Classic.

This year’s event is hosted by the New York Islanders.

Teams representing NHL franchises from across the U.S. are competing in six different tiers, with champions crowned in each division.

In addition to NHL-affiliated sled hockey teams, the tournament also features members of the U.S. Women’s Para Ice Hockey Team, who won gold at the world championships in August.

For many athletes, sled hockey offers more than just competition, it’s a sense of freedom.

“From the moment I was on the ice, I fell in love with it," said Morgan Hosbrough, the head coach of the Dallas Stars. "You truthfully feel like your disability isn’t there. You are so free, you are flying on the ice.”

Games will continue throughout the weekend the Clark Gillies Arena in Dix Hills and the Rinx in Hauppauge.
