The Calverton National Cemetery has canceled its previously planned Veterans Day ceremony, citing a lapse in federal funding during the ongoing government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history.

Organizers say that even if the shutdown were to end immediately, there wouldn’t be enough time to properly prepare everything necessary to have the ceremony on Tuesday next week.

"We will continue to express our heartfelt gratitude to our nation’s Veterans for their service and sacrifice every day in every way we can," organizers wrote online.

Their Memorial Day ceremony slated for May 25, 2026, is still ongoing.

The shutdown has also impacted the usual grounds maintenance, as it was necessary to furlough workers who set permanent headstones and markers.

"We look forward to resuming normal operations and restoring the standard appearance of the cemetery as soon as the government shutdown concludes," they wrote.

The cemetery is open to visitors in the daytime during the shutdown.
