College students, city workers brace for potential LIRR strike

The potential Long Island Rail Road strike has riders worried about how they would get to and from the city next week if the trains don't run.
The LIRR is putting out warnings that the strike could happen this coming Thursday, Sept. 18. It would affect commuters who rely on the train to go to work, and also students who use the LIRR to get to and from class.
Farmingdale State College says about 40% of its students commute to campus using the LIRR. For those who can't get to class if the strike happens, the college will allow remote instruction and submission of assignments electronically.
Hofstra posted to its website that students and teachers should prepare for the possibility of online classes if the potential strike affects their ability to travel to campus. Professors there have until Tuesday morning to come up with a teaching plan.
Riders hope there is a quick resolution between the MTA and the unions. The MTA, the unions, or the governor could call for a presidential emergency board that could delay a strike for several months while talks continue.
A spokesperson for the unions says they are not planning to call for an emergency board to delay the strike.
