Franklin Square family frustrated by months of overnight construction noise
They say the constant noise from heavy machinery and construction activity has disrupted their nights, leaving the family exhausted.
A Franklin Square family says their summer has been sleepless — thanks to noisy overnight construction work by PSEG Long Island contractors just feet from their home.
Nancy Savasta and her son, Jonathan, live next door to an electrical substation where the utility has been conducting late-night work since June. They say the constant noise from heavy machinery and construction activity has disrupted their nights, leaving the family exhausted.
“We couldn’t sleep,” Nancy said. “They’d be working all night and you’d get 45 minutes [of rest] here, 45 minutes there.”
Jonathan echoed his mother’s frustration.
“It bothers everyone in our family. We’ve spoken to our neighbors and they’re all bothered by it," he says.
According to a spokesperson for PSEG Long Island, the utility installed new underground transmission lines over the past year between three substations in the area to meet increased electricity demand. The project included tearing up sections of Hempstead Turnpike — a busy state road — which then had to be restored overnight to avoid major daytime traffic disruptions.
In a written statement, spokesperson Elizabeth Flagler said, “PSEG Long Island and its contractors have worked to minimize the disturbances as much as possible, while ensuring the reliability work is completed safely and efficiently.”
PSEG says the overnight work wrapped up Friday morning. However, the Savastas say the problems aren’t over. There’s still a temporary gate blocking parking on part of their street, and piles of dirt and gravel left behind.
“I don’t ever want them to do it again,” Nancy said. “They need to restore the fence, take down the no parking sign, and they need to be good neighbors.”
While PSEG Long Island officials confirm that some workers may return to the site to remove materials or equipment, it says any remaining work will not be done overnight.
