The man accused of killing another man in Bay Shore and then shooting a Suffolk police officer faced a judge today.

Dozens of officers were in the court room for his first appearance.

As News 12 has reported, Nieves Reyes is accused of murdering a man named Eugene Allen and is accused of later shooting a Suffolk police officer in the face.

The officer was investigating the homicide when the shooting happened.

According to the prosecutor, Reyes was captured on video chasing Allen with a machete.

The prosecutors said Allen’s head was nearly severed from his body.

The prosecutors said the case against the defendant is overwhelming and that he admitted to the murder of Allen and to shooting at officers.

The president of the PBA spoke after the defendant’s arraignment.

Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello said, “After committing a savage and brutal murder, his intent wasn't to kill one police officer but to kill multiple police officers. We were fired upon, and it was only a small miracle one of our officers weren't killed in this incident. He should never see the light of day again.”

The prosecutors said a machete was recovered from the defendant’s kitchen and two shotguns were also recovered from the home.

Reyes is being held without bail and faces life in prison.

The officer shot is expected to make a full recovery.
