The New York state Legislature passed a bill that would remove a requirement mandating gas distribution utilities pay for the connection of new customers within 100 feet of the existing gas main. The cost would instead be covered by the homeowner requesting the change in service.
Long Island elected officials, trade organization leaders and union representatives are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to veto the bill, expressing concerns about added costs to homeowners and the loss of union jobs.
Supporters of the bill say it will promote the state's environmental goals and ensure that ratepayers won't have to foot the bill for new customer connections.
