Town of North Hempstead Building Department removes partially collapsed bus from garage

A coach bus that has been stuck for two days on a partially collapsed parking garage in Nassau has been removed.
A crane hoisted the bus off the North New Hyde Park property early Friday morning.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office tells News 12 its inspection revealed multiple violations, including issues with the sprinklers, fire alarms and electrical.
The parking garage remains closed indefinitely as a result.
They plan to inspect three adjacent buildings next week that have similar parking structures, but say those buildings are safe for public use.
Town of North Hempstead spokesperson Umberto Mignardi tells News 12 in a statement:
“Following the recent collapse of the garage deck at 1979 Marcus Avenue, North Hempstead Building Inspectors, in coordination with The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office, have inspected the facility. We concur with their assessment: the garage must remain closed to the public indefinitely. Additionally, the Town of North Hempstead has hired a structural engineer to further evaluate the facility’s integrity. The safety of our residents and neighbors will always be our top priority.”
