Commuters faced frustrating delays and at least one cancellation Tuesday afternoon on several Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) branches amid extreme heat.

Delays began around 2 p.m. and affected multiple lines, including the Babylon, Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Montauk branches. One train on the Hempstead branch was also canceled.

The MTA has not confirmed whether the heat directly caused the disruptions.

According to the LIRR, the delays stemmed from several issues: switch or signal trouble at Mineola and Jamaica, and near Bethpage, Hicksville and Port Jefferson.

There were also equipment problems on the Hempstead branch and a track defect requiring inspection on the Port Jefferson line.

Commuters stuck in the heat expressed frustration.

“I just got out of the bus and I’m already sweating,” said Chin Ukaegbu, of Roosevelt. “I don’t feel too strongly about it, but I don’t like the fact that I’m in the sun.”
