The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office regularly does illegal dumping enforcement, and on Tuesday, Earth Day, Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. announced the arrest of two people who are accused in separate dumping incidents in and around the Pine Barrens.

The incidents were caught on camera.

Joao Abreu, of Port Jefferson, allegedly dumped 24 tons of concrete in a wooded area off Long Island Avenue in Yaphank, on the outskirts of the Pine Barrens.

Authorities say he faces up to 7 years behind bars if convicted and steep fines.

On top of his alleged dumping, the sheriff’s office says Abreu had 27 license suspensions, did not have a valid CDL license and says his commercial vehicle had 19 safety violations.

Abreu’s lawyer James D’Angelo told News 12 that his client pleaded not guilty and said, “We’re going to fight the charges.”

He said his client is a family man, who works hard to support his family.

Jeanne Rodriguez, of Riverhead, is accused of dumping mattresses, box springs, dressers and a television in the Pine Barrens in Manorville. She pleaded not guilty.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico called these “crimes of greed, crimes of stupidity.”
