A Brentwood teacher has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against a colleague and the district.

In the complaint, Rhonda Young says Kevin Coyne called her a racial slur in a text message. Young also accused Coyne of trapping her in a room while screaming at her.

The lawsuit says the harassment began in 2015 when Young was appointed to an assistant director position and has continued.

In a statement to News 12, Brentwood Union Free School District Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera said, "We are aware of the recent article regarding a lawsuit filed by Ms. Rhonda Young against the District and Mr. Kevin Coyne. While we do not typically comment on pending litigation, it is important to note that the District conducted a thorough independent investigation into the matter. The investigation found no evidence of racial or gender-based discrimination committed against Ms. Young."

"The District remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful work environment for all employees and takes all allegations seriously. As this is now a legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time."
