It's been two weeks since a three-alarm fire broke out at a six-story apartment complex near Ellis and Pugsley avenues.

Since then, residents say they've been living in limbo waiting to hear back from city services about what comes next.

“We have kids, we have family members, elderly who don’t know where they are going to go next," said Liz Maria Garcia, a displaced tenant.

Liz Maria and other tenants have been living in a hotel provided by the Red Cross. The temporary housing will last until March 14, but some residents say they don't know where they'll go once that runs out.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen the doors are still locked here," said Tiffany Ramirez, a displaced tenant.

A spokesperson for the city's Housing Preservation and Development agency says they are monitoring the repair process, and tenants could be allowed to move back in. Neighbors tell News 12 when they've reached out to the landlord and HPD they've gotten the runaround.

“There’s no work being done. The landlord keeps telling us ‘give me a few minutes give me a few minutes,'" said Pat Harris.

The landlord of the building, Moshe Piller, has a long history of complaints and violations.

In 2022, the mayor filed a lawsuit against Piller after he amassed more than 1,900 violations.

News 12 reached out to Piller for a comment but has not heard back.
