Some Belmont residents at 2334 Washington Ave. said their fire alarms never went off when a fire ripped through their building Saturday morning.

According to the FDNY, a fire broke out on the second floor at 2:30 a.m. Residents tell News 12 the fire alarms didn't sound. The smell of smoke woke them up.

"There was no alarms, so no beeping," one resident said, "I had to go down the fire escape."

According to city data, they are currently no records of violations or complaints regarding the emergency response system in the building.

News 12 spoke with the family that lives directly above where the fire started. They say their apartment is destroyed and unlivable – but are grateful they woke up in time.

"If we were still sleeping, I don't know what would have happened," one resident said.

Officials said seven people suffered minor injuries. One person was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.
