Work to begin Wednesday morning on emergency road in Head of the Harbor

Construction of an emergency road in Head of the Harbor will get underway Wednesday morning, after Mill Creek Road collapsed during an August rainstorm.
The road collapse left residents of seven households unable to drive to and from their homes. Emergency vehicles and delivery services are also unable to access the houses.
The new road will connect the Mill Creek Road homes to nearby Emmet Drive. All of the impacted homeowners had to sign off on the project. Town of Smithtown officials say the final signature was collected Tuesday afternoon.
The 400- to 500-foot long road will cut through the woods, using a path that already exists. Workers will have to remove trees, level the ground and install a type of gravel called reprocessed concrete aggregate.
Work on the new road is expected to last three to five days. Smithtown Highway Superintendent Robert Murphy says it could take about one year to repair Mill Creek Road.
