Emergency sewer repair project in Greenburgh stinks – but it’s necessary, officials say

Residents in Greenburgh say a town project has them dealing with foul sewer smells and traffic problems.
Condo owner Rudy Rinaldi says the project is disturbing the operation of several buildings along East Hartsdale Avenue. He says residents can't park, can't walk along the sidewalk and is limiting access to the garage because it was built over the sewer.
The emergency sewer repair project began just after Memorial Day in response to a sewer pipe break. The town sent a notification to residents notifying them that the work will continue until mid-October or possibly November.
Resident Heather Gordon says it's "a no-win situation" with all the traffic the project is causing. Some, however, may see all the inconvenience as a necessary evil.
"We all know we have to make the repairs. We can't be short sighted and say, 'we're not doing the repairs,' and everybody in the community knows that the repairs have to be made. I think what we have to do is have weekly meetings with residents, see if we could reduce some of the inconveniences," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.
Town officials say the construction steps being taken now must "be deliberate and carefully considered in order to avoid errors associated with expediting a repair."
