Town of Hempstead officials dedicated Fairview Avenue in Baldwin in honor of 9/11 hero and firefighter Bob Beckwith on Saturday.

The retired firefighter became a symbol of resiliency when he stood with President George W. Bush at ground zero. Beckwith died earlier this year due to a 9/11-related illness.

"He never spoke much about his bravery or the things he witnessed as a firefighter. He lived quietly with humility and strength, never seeking recognition for his actions. But as I got older, I began to understand just how much he gave not only to us as a family, but to his community and to his country," said grandson Matthew Beckwith.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump sent letters highlighting Beckwith's bravery that were read at the ceremony.
