The Department of Sanitation has a new program aimed to help keep communities clean.

News 12 walked down Fulton Street in Fort Greene Tuesday afternoon and saw the sidewalks and streets were clean, and people seem to be throwing out their trash.

However, the Department of Sanitation says this isn't always the case and it needs New Yorkers to keep outside of their properties clean.

"They actually collect 24 million pounds of garbage every single day off the streets of New York City," according to Pam Harris, the president of the Sanitation Foundation.

People say they have seen a lot of trash in many areas across the borough, and now there's a new "hall of shame" to fix the mess.

"We want to live, we want to dine, we want to shop on clean sidewalks and clean streets," said Harris.

DSNY is now calling out property owners who don't clean their sidewalks and 18 inches into the streets outside of their properties.

DSNY and the Sanitation Foundation are asking New Yorkers to take a photo of the trash and submit it. Once it's reported, that sidewalk slob becomes a member of the "hall of shame."

"It seems like a lot of measures have been taken to educate them and get them to do the right thing and so this is just like what else can we do like lets try this," said Harris.

The Sanitation Department told News 12 the cost for repeat offenders will increase and can go up to 500 for the worst of the worst.
