Peapack-Gladstone officials will look to take additional steps to control a geese problem in the borough after the council recently approved a controversial plan to euthanize geese by gassing them.

The goal of the plan is to make sure the park and surrounding areas are clean and useable. The borough and even some residents say they have used numerous methods to get rid of the geese.

Peapack-Gladstone Mayor Mark Corigliano says they are trying two additional remediation measures:

1. A different spray treatment recommended to use by the Animal Protection League.

2. Using a drone to frighten the geese.

“However, we are still under contract with the USDA to assist us in managing the population, and their biologists are actively monitoring our park and the geese population as well,” Corigliano said in a statement.

In a March 5 council meeting, Councilwoman Jamie Murphy says she brought up concerns to the USDA and ultimately came up with a plan to kill the geese starting with the eggs, then round up the geese and humanely euthanize them. The borough says that plan is the last resort.

The next borough council meeting is June 6.
