The Northport Fire Department held an extrication tournament Saturday in memory of a firefighter who died in a crash in 2008.
Over 30 teams from 17 different departments competed in rescue scenarios during the event.
The tournament is dedicated to Northport Firefighter Chuck Varese. His father told News 12 that the event is about camaraderie and providing extra training.
“They’re learning new techniques, and you know what, that’s saving lives,” he said.
