Local shoppers disappointed with Dollar Tree’s decision to close select stores nationwide

Dollar Tree, which also owns Family Dollar, announced on Wednesday it will be closing 1,000 of its stores.
The stores are known for dollar price tags and cost-friendly pricing. Across the country, 600 Family Dollar locations will close in 2024 with another 370 closing over the next several years. A list of the locations that will close has not been released yet.

For many people in the area, the name itself is iconic and they say it'd be a shame to close any of the stores.
"Family dollar…very convenient, the prices are always good,” said one shopper.
"This is the only dollar store on the West Side. Besides that, you're going to have to go all the way to Stratford,” said another shopper.
Thirty Dollar Tree stores will also close. Shoppers at a location in Norwalk said they didn't like the thought of possibly having to go somewhere else.
"Hopefully this store stays, but it's a shame that a lot of stores are closing,” said Daisy Campos, of Norwalk.
Dollar Tree is Campos’ first stop when it comes to festive fun.
"I do all the Easter baskets, Christmas, Valentine's Day baskets…for my kids,” said Campos.
Shoppers across the nation looking for low prices will have to find other stores that are able to match Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.
A company spokesperson released the following statement:
“As previously disclosed, in the fourth quarter of 2023 we initiated a comprehensive review of our store portfolio to identify and address underperforming stores and invest in improved store standards and growth. Our review identified approximately 600 Family Dollar stores for closure in the first half of 2024 and an additional approximately 370 stores to be closed over the next several years during the normal course of lease expiration. Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores are important to thousands of communities across this country. We owe it to those we serve to position all of [our] stores for success and meet the expectations of our valued customers and associates.”
