Medical examiner: Service member who died after fall at Big Snow had heart condition
A Bergen County medical examiner says that Airman 1st Class Peter Matthews died from cardiac arrhythmia due to short QT syndrome, an inherited heart abnormality.

Matthews died in December 2022. Family members say Matthews fell backward while snowboarding, hit his head, and became unconscious. Ski patrol responded and rendered first aid, but Matthews died at the hospital.
But the medical examiner says that there were no internal injuries or skull or bone fractures.
The 24-year-old was best known as a hardworking crew chief assigned to the 17th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron under the Maryland National Guard. He was even awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal earlier this year.
