Nassau County is putting new instruction signs up at Nickerson Beach to teach swimmers how to escape rip currents.

The measure was put in place to honor Alexandra de Moura, of Garden City, who was killed in a rip current accident in 2019.

Her mother, Josephine de Moura, has been advocating for rip current awareness to prevent other deaths.

"People need to look before entering the beaches," Josephine de Moura says. "They need to look for the signs - What are the conditions of the water? What do the different color flags mean? So, it's all about education."

Over 60 people have died from rip current drownings so far this year.

Nassau has also designated July as Rip Current Awareness Month.
