Family: Grandmother died in New Cassel house fire

Officials say one person died Thursday in a New Cassel house fire.
They say the fire broke out at a home on Division Avenue around 11:13 a.m.
It took 10 mutual aid departments assisted by the Westbury Fire Department to put out the fire. Fire officials say the fire was under control in 30 minutes.
Family members say a grandmother who was trapped in the flames died in the fire. They say she had one leg amputated due to a battle with diabetes.
The grandmother has been identified by officials as 73-year-old Jacqueline Geffrard.
A family member says he tried to save Geffrard but that it was impossible because of the intense flames and smoke.
Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro says one firefighter suffered a burn injury to his hand. That firefighter was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment.
Officials say eight occupants of the home were able to exit the house prior to police arrival. No other injuries were reported.
The home was destroyed, and the basement has water damage.
The family says they believe the fire started in the kitchen. They say they are in contact with the Red Cross for housing.
Officials say the fire is not considered suspicious at this time and the exact cause is under investigation.
