3rd annual Hockey For Hope fundraiser held in Dix Hills to benefit cancer patients

The third annual Hockey For Hope was held in Dix Hills Saturday night to raise funds for those who have been diagnosed with cancer.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office and the New York Cancer Foundation faced off at the Town of Huntington Clark Gillies Arena in a charity ice hockey showdown.
The New York Cancer Foundation won the first annual game, and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office won the following year.
"When I had my first battle with cancer, Mario Lemieux, Hall of Fame hockey player of the Pittsburgh Penguins, had developed lymphoma a few months before me, so I kind of had a lot of admiration for him. I took up the sport of ice hockey and it's been nonstop ever since," said Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr., of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the New York Cancer Foundation. The organization's mission is to relieve some of the financial burden for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer.
"Every dollar we raise tonight goes to New York Cancer Foundation and to help the patients of Long Island who really need the money to pay for things like rent, and their heat, and their car, so it goes for a great cause," said foundation president Dr. Jeff Vacirca.
John Delgaudio, of Ronkonkoma, was diagnosed with prostate cancer almost two years ago. When his doctor told him about Hockey For Hope, he knew had to come and watch the game.
"First off, I'm a huge hockey fan and then to be a part of something like this is awesome," Delgaudio said.
The New York Cancer Foundation defeated the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office 5-4.
