A total of three people, including one firefighter and a pair of residents, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a fire tore through part of an apartment complex in Suffolk County.
The fire started at the Fairfield Suburbia Gardens complex at 381 Great East Neck Rd., in West Babylon, a little before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Video showed flames shooting through several top-floor units on the backside of one of the buildings in the complex.
The damage was extensive this morning, including holes in the roof, charred interiors and exteriors and windows blown out.
13 fire departments responded and got it under control in just over an hour, Suffolk County fire officials said.
"Great job done by the local fire and EMS agencies in cold temperatures," Suffolk County Fire Coordinator Rudy Sunderman told News 12.
The Red Cross said it assisted 19 adults and two children across 12 units. Suffolk County Fire officials said others from the complex went to stay with family and friends.
Suffolk County Fire officials said residents were temporarily brought over to Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church by the local fire department to stay out of the cold and meet with county agencies as well as the Red Cross, to help with food and temporary places to stay.
The Babylon Town Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
