Two men are recovering after being pulled from the chilly Nissequogue River when their canoe overturned.
The men, ages 22 and 25, were spotted in distress by a birdwatcher who was perched on a nearby bluff. She called out for help, and a neighbor ran and got a public safety officer for help.
Amateur video captured the scene as rescuers arrived and pulled both men to safety. The pair was hospitalized to be treated for hypothermia.
The birdwatcher says she's glad she was in the right place at the right time. "I kept thinking, if I didn't watch them, they would have died. No question about it," she says.
The river rescue came just a day after two other men on a fishing trip had to be rescued when they got stuck in a muddy spot on the river.
