Suffolk police released surveillance video Thursday that shows two people running across the parking lot of the Islamic center that was vandalized earlier this week.
As News 12 reported, a religious flag was set on fire and there was graffiti found Monday at the Islamic Center of Suffolk County.
Abutalib Aqueel is a member of the executive committee at the center. He says he was devastated when he first saw the graffiti painted on the property along with their flag that was burned.
"This is like the most sacred religious symbol for us," says Aqueel. "We feel like it was a direct attack on our faith -- on us."
Aqueel says seeing so many people come out and support the center since this vandalism occurred has been overwhelming.
More than 200 people, including religious leaders, lawmakers and members of the community came together Thursday to condemn the acts of hate.
Community member Damien Payne says what happened is awful. He says, "I'm heartbroken."
"My father's side is Catholic. My mother's side is Jewish," says Payne. "We're all mixed religion here. Mixed faith- mixed culture. That's what makes us beautiful."
Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
