Police are trying to track down the two masked gunmen who shot their way into an Eastport home yesterday, demanded money and then killed one of the tenants who lived inside.

Investigators say that the burglary attempt happened at a home on East Moriches Boulevard shortly after 3 a.m. The suspects used a shotgun to shoot a lock off the front door, the force knocking the whole door off its hinges.

Once inside, the gunmen announced a robbery and shot one of the victims in the head, killing him. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Francisco Pirir, a Guatemalan immigrant who worked as a landscaper. He was killed in front of his two brothers, who also lived in the home.

Another man was shot in the hand during the incident. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Police have not yet said if Pirir was the intended target, or if it was a random crime. It is unclear if the suspects got away with anything.

Toni Citarelli runs Citarelli's Gourmet Deli across the street from the home where the shooting happened, and would see Pirir and his roommates nearly every day. She says she believes Pirrir was working to send money back to his family in Guatemala, and adds that the men were polite, hard-working people who kept to themselves.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
