The war in Iraq hit home Friday when families were notified that two Long Island soldiers had been killed in action.
U.S. Army Spc. James Lundin, of Bellport, died after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Lundin's father said his 20-year-old son was inspired to enlist by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11th. Lundin enlisted six months before he turned 18, his father said. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind a wife, whom he wed in January.
U.S. Army Pfc. Matthew Baylis, who celebrated his 20th birthday 10 days ago, was killed when his convoy was attacked by small arms fire. Devastated friends said Baylis, of Oakdale, always wanted to join the Army. They called him their hero. Baylis is survived by his parents and older brother.
