Ten Long Island high school students have been named as regional finalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology competition.
The 10 were selected from 69 regional semifinalists who were named Tuesday. A total of 96 students from New York were chosen as regional finalists.
Brentwood High School senior Susell Contreras, originally from Honduras, says she never dreamed she would come this far in the competition.
"The scientific community is something I really love. It's not something that one person does. It's a community. Everyone works together for single purpose," says Contreras.
Contreras says she's going to study Korean and biochemistry in college. She says she hopes her accomplishments will set a great example to all the youth in her community.
The next step in the competition is an oral presentation on Nov. 19. After a year of hard work, the students are hoping to make it to the national competition in Washington, D.C. in December.
