One of the two NYPD officers from Long Island injured in a Brooklyn shootout has been released from the hospital.
As News 12 has reported, Offficer William Reddin, of Lynbrook, and Officer Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh, were hospitalized early Saturday morning following a gunfight with a suspect in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
Officer Yurkiw's protective vest was struck by a bullet. He was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home. Officer Reddin remains in the hospital after a bullet entered his hip.
New York City officials are investigating the possibility that friendly fire was involved, according to the Associated Press.
Investigators say the incident began when officers responded to a report of possible shots fired at 3:20 a.m. Saturday. As the officers approached the area, authorities say a man pointed a revolver at them. The suspect, identified as Jamal Funes, 34, then fled in a vehicle and the officers followed, police say.
The brief chase ended when Funes crashed into a patrol car nearby. Police officials say Funes and the officers then exchanged fire.
Both officers were visited at the hospital by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.
Authorities say Yurkiw's father, who was also a police officer, similarly survived a gunshot to his bulletproof vest 27 years ago.
Police say Funes was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Funes, of New Jersey, has an extensive criminal history, according to officials.
A .357 revolver was recovered at the scene, investigators say.
