Police say a man was killed in a fast-moving fire that tore through a motel in North Amityville early Sunday morning.
The fire started at the Sayonara Motel at 831 North Broadway just after 5:30 a.m. Officials say sleeping guests awoke to the smell of smoke.
News 12 is told that some motel guests were trapped inside the building when the fire spread. Video from the scene showed firefighters rescuing a woman from a window.
The deceased victim has been identified as 56-year-old Kevin Furey. Police say he was residing in a room on the motel's second floor. They say the fire broke out in a separate room on that floor.
It's unclear how many people were inside at the time, but there have been no reports of additional injuries.
A large portion of the motel was completely gutted by the flames. The Red Cross is providing emergency support to six adults who lived in units that were damaged or destroyed by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but police say it does not appear to be criminal in nature.
