One person has been confirmed dead after an East Rockaway gas station went up in flames Tuesday night. Officials say the fire started at the Exxon station on Atlantic Avenue around 11:30 p.m. According to officials, the fire broke out in the gas station's bathroom.Fire officials say two people were rushed to the hospital due to injuries from the blaze. One of those individuals died, the other is listed in stable condition with burns to the hands and arms.
The gas station's owner, Sal Mercatante, says he believes the victims were homeless people who broke into the building.Four Nassau County police officers were treated and released for minor injuries they sustained while trying to rescue one of the individuals.The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The name of the deceased individual has not been released.
