People had the chance Tuesday evening to get a glimpse of the environmental impact report for the new Belmont Park redevelopment plan.

Residents were able to comment on the draft environmental impact study prepared by Empire State Development. Overall, it says the project would not have an adverse impact on air quality, noise, or natural resources. The development would, however, have a significant impact on traffic at several intersections during the morning and evening rush hours.

The plan includes the nearly 700,000-square-foot arena for the New York Islanders. It also features up to 435,000 square feet for retail, dining and entertainment space, as well as 1,940 parking spaces. And there are plans for hotel, office and community space.

Kristy Rycik, of Floral Park, was among dozens of speakers who voiced their opposition to the plan. She said just over 900 people signed letters against it and said that residents would not benefit from the development.

John Johnson, a supporter from Elmont, said people need to see the bigger picture – specifically, how the development could create economic opportunities for youth.

Tuesday's meeting was the first of three this week. The others will follow at 4 p.m. Wednesday and 6 p.m. Thursday, all at the Elmont Memorial Library.
