Rash of crimes prompt calls for patrols in Port Jefferson
Port Jefferson Station residents say they have asked for police to step up patrols after a recent rash of crime in the area.
Residents pointed to the fatal shooting at Billiards DBM on Main Street on Sunday night. Investigators say 27-year-old Albert Louise Lopez Rodriguez, of Selden, was shot and killed inside the location after an argument. No arrest has been made.
There was also vandalism at Island Christian Church on East Main Street in Port Jefferson earlier this month. And video a couple months ago showed a homeless man and woman having sex at a Port Jefferson Station bus stop.
Residents say vacant businesses and buildings are also creating a problem with the homeless population in the area.
Members of the Port Jefferson Station-Terryville Civic Association are asking the town of Brookhaven and police for help curb the violence.
Suffolk Police Chief of Patrol Robert Brown points to marked and unmarked vehicles, along with security cameras in the area, as examples of increased presence.
"Arrest activity is up, summons activity is up and we are hopefully moving in the right direction despite the recent incidents," says Suffolk Police Chief of Patrol Robert Brown.
Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine told News 12 that he is working with the community on a plan to revitalize the area.
"We are aware that there is a housing problem, a homeless problem here," says Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. "We are looking to implement that and change this entire area."
