News 12 Digital is highlighting the most-viewed stories of 2018 as part of our 'News 12's Most-Viewed' series. This story on a homeless man and woman having sex at a bus stop was first published on May 10. Original story below.
A homeless man and woman were caught on a cellphone camera apparently having sex at a bus stop last Friday afternoon.
Police say the incident occurred at a bus stop in Port Jefferson Station on May 4 around 4 p.m.
In a 2 ½-minute cellphone video too graphic to show, the woman can be seen with her lower body exposed. The man is behind her, then she falls to the ground.
The video shows the woman trying, but failing to pull her pants up. The man pulls the woman to her feet and appears to have sex with her. A third man is standing next to them.
The 32-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with public lewdness. Suffolk police say she was not mentally incapacitated or physically helpless at the time. They say she consented to having sex with the man.
Police are still searching for the man in the video.
News 12 asked Anthony Zenkus, the director of education for the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS), to watch the uncensored version of the video.
He says the woman “looks like she’s being victimized.”
“She can't walk. She can barely keep her balance. She had to be helped up,” said Zenkus. "People who are homeless are often victims of exploitation, victims of trauma. They need help. They need services."
The Suffolk County Police Department told News 12 that the woman did not fit the criteria of a person who was not capable of giving consent.
