Stagnant wages, slim job prospects and the rising cost of higher education have combined to make student loan debt an increasingly difficult mountain to conquer for college graduates.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the college class of 2015 graduated with an average of $35,000 in student loan debt. President Barack Obama and Gov. Andrew Cuomo each recently announced proposals to tackle the issue, and today a Long Island congressman added one of his own.
The plan by Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) would tie student loan payments to income, and the money would be automatically deducted from their paychecks.
"It's time to replace the current program with a program tailored to each student's individual needs," he said.
The bill, called the ExCel Act, has just been introduced and the congressman is working to get co-sponsors.
Some students who spoke with News 12 say the plan would simplify the process. Others, however, said the automatic deductions wouldn't sit well with them.
