A Wyandanch man was indicted Thursday, accused of throwing sulfuric acid on his girlfriend's face and body.
Prosecutors say 42-year-old Douglas Graves attacked the woman during an argument in the early morning hours of Nov. 16 before he fled from the Wyandanch home he had been staying in.
Court documents say that Graves' girlfriend told police he carried the acid in a Clorox bottle for personal protection.
Court documents also say the woman's clothes were melting off her body when police arrived.
The victim was taken to Nassau County Medical Center for treatment of chemical burns.
Prosecutors say the burns were so severe that she will require multiple reconstructive surgeries.
Graves was found and arrested later on the morning of the assault, according to court documents.
Prosecutors say Graves called two different female associates on Nov. 20 and Nov. 24 to seek their help in preventing the victim from testifying.
Graves is also accused of attempting to contact the victim directly while she was in the hospital by calling her from jail.
Graves was charged assault, criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with a witness, criminal contempt and attempted criminal contempt.
Graves pleaded not guilty.
Graves is due back in court on Jan. 8. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
