Work to begin today to repair critical erosion damage on the Fire Island Inlet Bridge
Work starts two months after News 12 first reported on the significant damage that left a hole in the concrete exposion the rebar.

The New York State Department of Transportation will begin repairing significant damage on the Fire Island Inlet Bridge in Babylon today.
The state said severe winter weather caused the erosion and forced workers to install temporary steel plates.
The DOT said work was scheduled to be done before Memorial Day and that crews were waiting for conditions to permit it to start.
In February, just days after News 12 shared video of the damage, two members of the New York State Assembly, Assemblymen Jarett Gandolfo and Michael Durso, called on the DOT to accelerate the timeline for repairs.
Crews will begin the process of removing the plates and making critical fixes to ensure that section of the bridge is safe to drive over.
The state said it expects the work to take about a week to complete.
This work will coincide with the state's annual inspection of the Fire Island Inlet Bridge.
That work began on March 30 and is expected to last until the end of April.
The Robert Moses Causeway between the Ocean Parkway and Robert Moses State Park will be reduced to one lane with alternating flows of traffic controlled by flaggers weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. during that time.
