A home fire in the hamlet of Wallkill during the blizzard left a woman dead.

The Ulster County sheriff said the 67‑year‑old called 911 Monday morning to report the fire and said she was trapped inside.

Officers and firefighters were able to get her out, but she suffered several burns. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.

A 70‑year‑old man inside the home was able to get out on his own. He was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.

A police officer was also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Wallkill Fire Chief Gary Specht Jr. said crews “arrived on scene to a working house fire — one person trapped inside.”

“My assistant chief went inside, grabbed and got her out of the house. CPR was started immediately,” Specht said.

An Ulster County Sheriff’s deputy at the scene said the fire is being treated as a crime scene. investigators remained at the scene for hours Monday.

Mutual aid from Orange County responded to assist, and an Orange County fire investigator is also on scene.

McKayla Slater, who has lived in the neighborhood for five years, said she first noticed the fire while shoveling her driveway during the storm.

"I had gone over to try to help. The police showed up and we were able to spot her -- figure out where she was in the house and help get her out."

Slater said the two people who live in the house are an adult brother and sister.

"They were both pretty bad. The situation was not good," Slater said. "It was awful. Awful timing. Thankfully, it was a very quick response considering the weather."

Specht said the snowstorm may have aided response efforts, as the volunteer department had a full crew already on standby at the firehouse due to the storm.

News 12 has calls out to Ulster County officials for more information. The cause has not yet been released.
